How Generative AI Is Changing Business – an Interview

Bernard Marr is an internationally best-selling business author, keynote speaker and strategic advisor to companies and governments. He advises and coaches many of the world’s best-known organizations such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Toyota, The Royal Air Force, Shell, The UN, Walmart, among many others.

We wanted some of his insight, especially related to his upcoming book Generative AI in Practice: 100+ Amazing Ways Generative Artificial Intelligence is Changing Business and Society (March 25, Wiley), so we sought him out. Herewith is a brief interview.

Question: What led to your interest in AI?

Answer: “My interest in AI was sparked by its potential to fundamentally transform how we live, work, and solve complex problems. The intersection of AI’s capabilities with data analysis, decision-making, and creative processes promised a future where technology could significantly enhance human abilities and efficiencies.”

Q: What governmental bodies are taking the best approach to regulating AI and why?

A: “Currently, the European Union is taking a proactive and comprehensive approach to regulating AI, highlighted by the proposed AI Act. Their strategy balances the promotion of innovation with the protection of citizens’ rights, focusing on high-risk applications. This approach is commendable because it seeks to establish clear rules for ethical and safe AI deployment while fostering an environment where AI can thrive responsibly.”

Q: Is there ever a point where we say the good of AI outweighs the bad? Is that problematic?

A: “The question of whether the good of AI outweighs the bad is complex and context-dependent. While AI has enormous potential for positive impact, its risks cannot be overlooked. It’s problematic to make blanket statements without considering the specific applications and implications of AI technologies. A nuanced perspective is essential, one that weighs benefits against risks in different contexts and strives for a balanced approach to AI development and use.”Gen AI in Practice Cover

Q: What steps should be taken for the responsible growth of AI?

A: “For the responsible growth of AI, several steps are critical. Firstly, there must be a commitment to ethical standards and transparent practices from all stakeholders involved in AI development and deployment. Secondly, fostering public awareness and understanding of AI, including its potential and limitations, is crucial. Furthermore, encouraging collaboration between governments, industry, and academia can ensure that AI growth is aligned with societal needs and ethical considerations. Lastly, implementing robust regulatory frameworks that adapt to technological advancements is essential for mitigating risks and ensuring AI’s benefits are maximized.”

A: “As we navigate the complexities of AI’s role in society, it’s imperative that we prioritize ethical considerations and engage in ongoing dialogue among all stakeholders.
